World Indoor Bowls Tournament 2022
The World Singles and Mixed Pairs Indoor Bowls Championships for 2022 will be held at the club between Monday April 25th and Friday April 29th 2022. There have previously been two similar ‘world’ championship tournaments, organised by separate indoor bowling organisations, one based in the Northern hemisphere, and one in the Southern hemisphere. These two organisations have now connected and the 2022 event will be a truly worldwide tournament with thirty nations represented.
The format will be round robin matches over four days with the finals being held on Friday. Play will be from 9.30am to around 8.00pm for the first four days, and on Friday morning for the finals. We have invited the Mayor of Bristol to attend a reception for the players and officials on Sunday 24th April.
This is an honour for our club and is due in no small measure to efforts of our previous chairman, Lewis Toman, who was the moving force in bringing these championships to the Club in 2020 (subsequently cancelled owing to the Covid pandemic). Lewis has taken the lead in the organisation of the championships within the Club.
There is much to organise between now and then, and the Club is expected to provide hosting, stewarding and marking personnel, and catering for the duration of the matches. New volunteers would be extremely welcome, not only for the event but for the day-to-day operations of the Club. Please speak to Cheryl or a director if you wish to be involved, and keep an eye on the notice boards for updates and specific requests for duties.
Entry to the World Championships will be free to BIBC members on production of a current membership card. Daily and weekly tickets are available from the EIBA and the club at £5/day per person or £20 for the week. Competitors will be arriving for practise sessions during the week preceding the tournament, immediately after Easter, so there will be no opportunity for members roll-ups from 19th April.
